The NZSA Visiting Lecturer in 2025 is to be Dr Matthew Beckman, Associate Research Professor, Penn State University, and Director of the Consortium for Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education (CAUSE). He is well-respected within the international statistics education community and has given many successful US and international talks on topics ranging from the analysis of student engagement with statistical software tools, to research exploring the assessment of student understanding of statistical inference. Currently, Matthew is conducting innovative research at the undergraduate level through a NSF-funded Project called CLASSIFIES (Common Language Assessment in Studying Statistics with Instructional Feedback and Increased Enrollment Scalability). His research will be of interest to statistics educators across NZ universities, particularly those involved with large introductory level statistics and data science courses, where there are practical challenges to providing feedback on student writing. More information about Matthew can be found on his personal website, as well as in his CV.
